If we cross these limits, abrupt or irreversible environmental changes can occur with serious consequences for humankind.&amp;lt;br\/&amp;gt;&amp;lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/earthscaping.dk\/index.php\/glossary\/planetary-boundaries\/\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'>Planetary boundaries<\/a> is a concept involving Earth system processes that contain environmental boundaries.It was proposed in 2009 by a group of Earth system and environmental scientists, led by Johan Rockstr&ouml;m from the Stockholm Resilience Centre and Will Steffen from the Australian National University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group wanted to define a &ldquo;Safe operating space for humanity&rdquo; for the international community, including governments at all levels, international organizations, civil society, the scientific community and the private sector, as a precondition for sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We are on average, moving towards four degrees warming this century. And we haven&rsquo;t been in a four-degree warmer world for the past four million years. So it&rsquo;s not as if it&rsquo;s a place we know very well.<\/p><cite>Johan Rockstr&ouml;m<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transgressing one or more <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Planetary boundaries&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;&amp;lt;!-- wp:paragraph --&amp;gt;In 2009, 28 internationally renowned researchers identified and quantified a set of nine planetary boundaries within which humanity can continue to develop and feel good in the future. In 2015, <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/347\/6223\/1259855\">the number was increased to 4<\/a>.
